When most people think of the Algarve, they think of summer. Long days at the beach, warm evenings, busy terraces and plenty of sunshine. We love summer too. But if you ask us when the East Algarve really shows its character, autumn is very high on the list.
September still feels like summer here. The sea is warm, the days are long and life carries on outdoors. Then October arrives and everything grows a little quieter. The beaches have more space, restaurant tables are easier to find and Tavira slowly returns to its everyday rhythm. That is exactly what we love about this time of year.
Sunshine, without the summer rush
One of the pleasures of autumn in the East Algarve is how much time you can still spend outside. Lunch on a terrace, a walk along the Ria Formosa, a trip to the beach, or a coffee somewhere while you watch the day go by. None of that belongs only to July and August.
The temperatures are also far more comfortable for exploring. Tavira, Santa Luzia and Cabanas are best enjoyed slowly, on foot, without planning your day around the hottest hours. And there is something special about reaching a beautiful Algarve beach in October and finding you almost have it to yourself.
This is when you discover the real Tavira
Summer brings an energy to Tavira that we enjoy, but autumn brings back the town we know the rest of the year. The market is full of local produce, the fishermen are out on the Ria, the cafés fill with people who actually live here, and you start to notice the small details that get lost in the busier months.
Take a morning walk through Tavira, stop for a coffee, cross the Roman bridge, wander the narrow streets and maybe carry on to Santa Luzia for lunch. There does not always need to be a plan. That slower pace is a big part of why so many people fall for this side of the Algarve.
A different kind of beach day
Autumn beach days are different. You may not lie in the sun for eight hours, but you can walk for kilometres, stop for lunch, read, swim on a warm day or simply enjoy the view. Barril, Terra Estreita, Ilha de Tavira and Cabanas all feel completely different once the busiest weeks of summer have passed.
For us, this is one of the best times to really appreciate the coastline and the Ria Formosa. Bring a light jacket for later in the day, though. This is still autumn, even in the Algarve.
Stay a little longer
Maybe this is also why autumn works so well for longer stays. More and more of our guests are not here for a traditional one-week holiday. Some work remotely, some are escaping colder weather elsewhere in Europe, and others simply have the freedom to stay a few weeks and live at a different pace. The East Algarve suits that beautifully.
You can work in the morning and walk by the sea in the afternoon. Buy fresh fish and vegetables at the market instead of eating out every day. Find your café. Get to know the person behind the counter at the bakery. After a while, it stops feeling like a holiday destination. It just feels like a very nice place to live.

And there is still plenty happening
Autumn does not mean everything closes. Quite the opposite. Tavira and the towns around it carry on with normal life, restaurants stay open, markets keep going and there are plenty of reasons to explore beyond the beach. It is a lovely season for golf, cycling and walking, or for taking the car and finding some of the smaller villages inland.
And if the weather turns for a day? Stay in, cook something good, open a bottle of Portuguese wine and enjoy the house. Sometimes those are the days we remember most.
Maybe summer does not have to end in August
We often say the East Algarve is different from the Algarve many people picture. Quieter. More traditional. A little slower. In autumn, you feel that even more. So if you have only ever visited in July or August, it might be time to try it differently. Come in September. Come in October. Stay a little longer. You might find that the best time to visit the East Algarve is the one you had not considered.
