Tavira: authentic Algarve life
Set on the banks of the Gilão River, Tavira is often considered one of the Algarve's most beautiful towns, and it is easy to understand why. Tiled façades, cobbled streets, churches, small squares and the rooftops of the historic centre create a town that invites you to explore on foot.
Cross the old bridge over the Gilão, wander through the historic streets, visit the castle gardens, stop for coffee or find a table in the sunshine and watch local life go by. Tavira has visitors, of course, but it has never lost the feeling of being a real Portuguese town. That is part of its charm.
The Ria Formosa, at the heart of the Eastern Algarve
The Ria Formosa Natural Park is one of the defining landscapes of the Eastern Algarve. Its lagoons, salt marshes, channels, islands and sandbanks form a natural world between the mainland and the Atlantic Ocean.
It is a place to explore by boat, kayak, bicycle or on foot, or to admire over a long lunch beside the water. The Ria has shaped life here for generations, from fishing and shellfish gathering to the food and traditions of the towns along the coast. For nature lovers and birdwatchers, it shows something different with every season.
Beautiful beaches, just a boat ride away
Some of the finest beaches in the Eastern Algarve lie on the barrier islands beyond the Ria Formosa, and getting there is part of the experience. From Tavira, boats cross to Ilha de Tavira and its vast stretch of golden sand. Near Santa Luzia, Praia do Barril can be reached on foot or by its little train across the Ria, and its Anchor Cemetery recalls the tuna fishing community that once worked here.
Further east, small boats cross from Cabanas de Tavira to the long beach opposite the village, while the coastline towards Cacela Velha and Manta Rota offers another beautiful view of the region. Summer brings long days by the Atlantic, but these landscapes are just as special in the quieter months, for walking, cycling, photography or simply enjoying the space and light.
Santa Luzia, Cabanas and the pleasure of slowing down
A few minutes from Tavira, Santa Luzia is a traditional fishing village overlooking the Ria Formosa and famous for its octopus. It is a place for leisurely lunches beside the water, evening walks along the promenade and an atmosphere that stays close to the sea.
Further east, Cabanas de Tavira has its own relaxed character. Restaurants and cafés line the waterfront, fishing boats share the lagoon with the small boats crossing to the beach, and life slows down on its own. These are places where you do not need a long list of things to do. Sometimes, being there is enough.
A destination for golf
The Eastern Algarve is home to some of Portugal's most distinctive golf, which makes it a fine base for a golf holiday. Just outside Tavira, Benamor Golf sits between countryside and sea, on a course first designed by Sir Henry Cotton. Close to Cabanas and the Ria Formosa, Quinta da Ria plays beside one of the Algarve's most beautiful protected landscapes. A little further east, Monte Rei Golf & Country Club is one of the biggest names in Portuguese golf, with its Jack Nicklaus Signature North Course.
The mild climate makes golf particularly good in autumn, winter and spring, when comfortable temperatures and quieter courses give you another reason to visit outside the summer season.
Flavours of the Eastern Algarve
Food here is inseparable from the landscape. Fresh fish, clams from the Ria Formosa, razor clams, grilled seafood, cataplana and the famous octopus of Santa Luzia all tell part of the story of the region. Travel a little inland and the flavours change, reflecting the countryside as much as the coast. And no visit is complete without the traditional sweets, where almonds, figs, oranges and carob appear again and again.

One of the biggest misconceptions about the Algarve is that it is only a summer destination. We could not disagree more. Spring brings beautiful light, longer days and ideal conditions for walking, cycling, golf and exploring the Ria Formosa. Summer is made for beaches, boat trips and dinners outside. Autumn keeps much of the warmth and sunshine while the rhythm slows, one of the loveliest seasons for golf, nature and food. And winter shows perhaps the most authentic side of all.
Tavira does not close when summer ends. This is a living town. Markets open, cafés fill in the morning, fishermen keep their routines and restaurants welcome locals and visitors alike. The streets are quieter, the light is beautiful and there is time to experience the region rather than simply visit it. There is not one perfect season to discover the Eastern Algarve. Every season gives you a different reason to come back.
